Subject: [ferrethealth] Neurological problem or ????
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,

Zephyr is a spayed female ferret, rescued in April, 2004. Her age at
the time was estimated to be one year old so she is probably seven
now, maybe seven and a half. Up until now she has had no major health
issues whatsoever.

Earlier this year my housemate saw what she thought was hind end
weakness on one occasion which quickly disappeared. At a vet visit
nothing out of the ordinary was found and her blood glucose was 105.
There were no symptoms so we didn't do anything at the time. A couple
of months ago my housemate saw a recurrence and was worried enough to
call me while I was out. While we were on the phone Zephyr started
running around normally again. For the past two months we've seen no
symptoms.

Tonight Zephyr was normal for most of the evening and then, without
warning she fell down or her left side. She had what appeared to be a
mild seizure and seemed upset once she stopped shaking and I picker
her up. For the next 15 minutes or so she listed to the left and
would fall intermittently. Her hind legs were fine. The left foreleg
was the only one that was weak and would go out from under her.
Before we could even decide to call for an emergency vet visit she was
back to normal again. Last I checked she was asleep with Ella. No
symptoms have recurred.

The current plan is to get her to the vet, of course, but if there are
no symptoms I don't know what can be done aside from normal diagnostic
things like blood work and X-rays to see if something odd could be
found.

While she was symptomatic she reminded me of a ferret we sat for a
friend years ago who had lifelong neurological problems. He would run
along a wall or through tunnels to balance himself. Zephyr did that
briefly tonight

I should mention that Zephyr still has a good appetite, a beautiful,
soft full coat, and normal output.

I guess what I'm looking for are ideas or suggestions as to what this
could be. Any suggestions as to what to ask her vet to look for are
also welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Caity and the terrific trio
Ella, Zephyr and Chin Soon
