Subject: [ferrethealth] Inguinal hernia???
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Wondering if anyone has seen this in a ferret?

This morning when I picked up my male ferret Cappuccino, I noticed a pea-sized lump next to his penis, but it seemed to move around the penis when I gently pressed on it and am wondering whether it might be a hernia. Its a very odd presentation in that it moves in a circle around the penis. Its never been there before!

He is just under 2 years-old and received a Deslorelin implant last week because he was losing hair on his tail, hind end and over the shoulders, starting to drag around the sprites and his penis was irritated. His sexual behaviour has stopped and the penis is no longer red.

He was another rescue that I adopted last year.

He's always been very low key, and low energy and I worried he might have heart disease or something else going on but he always checks out okay (BG normal, etc.) when I've taken him to the vet.

He has an appointment Monday morning to see the vet.

I couldn't find anything in the literature on hernias in ferrets. Has anyone seen a moving lump around their ferret's penis or has had a lump like this diagnosed?

Thanks!

Tressie

[Not inguinal, but Hilbert had an umbilical hernia
and just needed a few stitches to shore up the
location.
