I used Biotene Veterinary Therapeutic Mouth Wash:

I don't squirt it over their teeth and gums as the bottle recommends, but dip my finger into the solution and wipe it over their teeth and gums several times, once a day. I have a 6 year-old who had some black tartar build-up and its almost entirely gone just with using this solution. Her canines are snowy white!

However, one my others (a DMK rescue) who came with abscessed teeth and several missing before her first birthday has to have her teeth cleaned professionally by the vet. I'm sure the Biotene helps but in her case its not enough.

So some may still need the professional cleaning depending on health and history - even if you manage to do it yourself.
