Subject: [ferrethealth] 'Mystery Diseases'
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

G'day,

To cut several very long stories short - within a short time, about three weeks, several ferrets died after a very brief but severe illness. Toxins and known ferret diseases were ruled out, by lab tests, post mortems and very knowlegable vets and pathologists. To this day we don't know what killed the ferrets. However in the meantime we have heard of other such cases and not only in ferrets (far away in other countries, thus no contact between animals).

My quesion: Is it possible that a relative benign organism, virus, etc., an infected animal usual can cope with or not show any or only mild clinical signs, mutate into a lethal form whithin the infected animal? Or into a form that does cause severe clinical signs?

Regards,
Ben
