Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Real Canadian ferret kits receiving mink distemper vaccine
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Tressie
The mink vaccine (Distm R TC by Intervet/Schering-Plough) is a
chicken embryo tissue culture distemper only vaccine for mink.
It should provide protection to ferrets also, but it would be safer to
use a vaccine that is approved for ferrets (Purevax Distemper by Merial)
or one that has been tested in ferrets (Galaxy D by
Intervet/Schering-Plough).
Unfortunately this mink vaccine was used in a recent case of DIM in a young
ferret. There will be a new DIM (and FIP) article coming out in the Sept
issue
of Veterinary Clinics of North America: Exotic Animal Practice.
At least they are not using the combination mink vaccine Distox-plus by
Intervet/Schering-Plough which contains distemper plus mink enteriitis
virus
(parvovirus), Clostridium, and Pseudomonas.
Hope that helps
