Hi Misty,
My ferrets are also kept in a darkened and cool environment.
I've had 2 male ferrets just under 2 years old diagnosed with adrenal disease. One underwent adrenal surgery and had the right adrenal removed. A year later started showing symptoms of adrenal disease again and received a Deslorelin implant. That was a year ago, and he's showing signs again so is going back for another Deslorelin implant. I've had him on oral melatonin the entire time.
The other boy just received his Deslorelin implant. He'll be 2 years old next month.
Both ferrets were rescues, subsequently adopted by me.
I've heard from numerous people - owners, shelter directors and veterinarians that more and more ferrets are showing up with signs of illness at much younger ages than ever before.
