Subject: [ferrethealth] ??? ON HEALTH OF FERRETS

Hello again, I have a question to ask here. I have been reading up on ferret's health issues being I am having health issues with one of my own ferrets. Why are there so many health problems with these animals? Seem like they have allot that can go wrong with them or am I reading more into this then what there is?
[There are almost 1,400 members here,
many with multiple ferrets, and a ferret will
pack all of its life into about 7 or 8 years
(give or take a few) including a lifetime of
health needs, plus this is specifically
a health site, so ferrets may seem more
unhealthy than they are.
That said, in the U.S. the ferrets really did
seem usually to be healthier and longer lived
when we first had ferrets almost 30 years ago
before there was so much breeding for fancies,
though there certainly were exceptions. Two
exceptions we ran into were an animal hoarder
whose ferrets only lived about two or three years,
and a place which was selling ferrets who were
fitch fur stock from a fur farm and had great
fur but similar life spans as the ferrets of that
one hoarder. So, genetics, poor breeding
practices, and poor care including during infancy and
before born should be expected to have impacts
on health, longevity, and sometimes even behavior.
A pet swap could be less likely to be a place
with healthy animals and this one might have
an underlying health issue that is not yet readily
apparent.
Was just a CBC done or also a Chem Panel?
Any other tests?
