I can't answer the "why" question but the dog and cat owners I know
also seem to spend lots of vet care.

Here is what I've read and what has matched my experience over the
past 12+ years: the average ferret will have one major health crisis
during their lifetime, probably requiring surgery and costing upwards
of $1,000.

The important word there is "average". I've had ferrets who have been
healthy throughout a good, long life and I've had ferrets who had all
sorts of problems and were expensive. The most expensive, Pertwee,
had more weird health problems than Carter has little pills and cost
me $8,000 over a five and a half year lifespan. When Pertwee was
healthy he was the most over-the-top energy-filled wired little weasel
and was nothing but fun to have around. You take the good with the
bad.

All the best,
Caity and the terrific trio
