Subject: [ferrethealth] !!HELP!!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

my poor girl is very sick, her name is Katrinna and she was a year in late may. i have owned her since Christmas. She is a very small ferret, and is not eating and she has gotten very tiny.
now it must be said that when i am home she is free range with me and my two dog, and when i am not at home and she is not with me she is in her room. now i got katrinna and a puppy at Christmas(long story don't ask) and here in northern Alberta its cold so we are pretty home bound. So now its summer, and the puppy would rather be laying out in the sun in the back yard and Ive sadly have been very busy with my work and a few weeks ago had leave on a trip. so she has not been getting the freedom out of her room that she is used too.
she has not eaten much in the last week and i have been feeding her pureed chicken baby food watered down with electrolyte water since Friday. and she is not doing anything but sleeping, though when she is up she is alert, does not stumble, her eyes, ears and nose are clean and her coat is glossy beside the fact that she is so skinny she looks alright.

i am from a very small town northern Alberta, and any vet in a 6hrs radius does not deal in exotics. thought the lady i seen today was very nice and caring, and really tried(reading her text book and all) was not of much comfort to me and my little friend.

Katrinna's temp is good, heart rate fine. they looked at her stool under the microscope and said it was loose but not to be concerned cause of all the watered down baby food Ive been feeding her it is to be expected, but no blood, no worms. nothing! she also is not concerned about any blockage saying that Katrinna being so small (1lbs) its was easy to feel and is also not worried about any adrenal problems. though she did give me 2 different antibiotics to give her just in case. one is metronidozole?? and the other is amoxilline.

What would make my girl go off her food?? the vet said to stop feeding her the pureed chicken and to feed her canned cat food?? she made me take a can of hills prescription a/d its a recovery diet for sick cats......its main protein source is pork...? and I'm not to keen on that brand of food to start am unsure of feeding it to my ferret. so i went to the grocery store (pet store is closed) and got all sorts of chicken based canned cat food, she is uninterested in all of it.

her main diet was hagen ferret food, 8n1 moist bites for ferret, and she really used to like the orijin regional red dog food(bison, wild boar and lamb) that my dogs eat.

i am lost on what to do and need some advise....PLEASE

[Dog food is NOT balanced for ferrets.
a/d is used successfully by many here as a recovery food.

Others will say more.
