Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: FRONTLINE and FERRETS
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My exotic vet says 'they' say not to use frontline on ferrets but he told us (and all his ferrents) years ago that it was fine & actually worked quite good. He was right. He said he thinks the problem was in people using a whole tube on them because people using it on little kittens were having the same problem too. We've never had a problem with them getting sick or anything from it; however, I only put it on them if I see a flea on any of them or the dog (who is also on frontline, but sometimes they ride inside on him I think). We use the frontline in a spray bottle (one squirt per pound of animal) that you can only get from the vet. I think it cost around $25 & has lasted for a long time.
We just took another rescue on Thursday (that makes 4!) - poor baby was infested with fleas. I put 2 squirts of the frontline on him Friday, took him to the vet Monday, voila! No fleas. Vet didn't see a single one. Sprayed the other 3 ferrets on Thursday night & they don't have any on them from him either.
I guess it really comes down to preference. But really with any flea medication, no matter what kind of animal you have, you have to be careful not to overdose. You can't give flea stuff like advantage or frontline more than once per 30 days. That's what'll make them sick & possibly lead to death.
