Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: ferret health question: lethargy, weight loss, blood work
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Sorry for the delay in responding.
So, we think the blood sample might have been messed up somehow, because it said that the glucose level was at 10, which from what I've been reading, would mean that he should be in a coma. But at any rate, it's not just the hypoglycemia that's pointing toward insulinoma. He also has trouble walking( the wobbly gait) and he's pretty lethargic.
So, we're considering getting an ultrasound for him, and also putting him on Pred if need be.
We have been feeding him an appetite stimulant canned food, since he hasn't been eating much of his kibble or meat. We are also giving him fluids (LRS) with Vitamin B mixed in. Any thoughts on that? And should we considering giving him little bits of sugar (honey) in order to "perk" him up a bit and help out his gimpy back legs?

One of our male ferrets, 3 years old, has been losing weight over the past several months and acting a bit more lethargic than his brother. Nothing showed up in fecal samples, so we just got some bloodwork done on him and he is hypoglycemic, anemic, and hypoproteimic(sp?).

No reason for the vitamins and the ultrasound will
not be useful for many insulinomae since so many are
incredibly small.

Prednisolone is the way to go as a first med usually
for insulinoma. Read in the archives why to use
Prednisolone rather than Prednisone.

Make sure that the ferret always has food handy and
has as many small meals as possible.

Why are fluids being given? Is he dehydrated?

Has the source of the anemia been found and also
what type of anemia is it?
