[If it is cardiomyopathy alone then perhaps a combo of meds, for example, Digoxin, Enacard, and Lasix might return quality of life for a while.

A chest ultrasound after the Lasix has reduced the fluid levels might well tell a lot, even a chest x-rays after the Lasix has done some work might.

There are multiple possible causes of such ascites (though less common than heart disease in ferrets) including pneumonia and thoracic lymphoma. Thoracic lymphoma is a very bad one.

This would be a HORRIBLE way to die - gasping for air. Congestive heart failure or pneumothorax (collapsed lungs) are both terribly painful.

Give him the peace of a gentle transition from this life. In hospice/palliative care this is refereed to as a 'good' death versus a 'bad' death that the former would be.
