Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Breathing problems - pneumonia or lymphoma or post-surgical complications?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Thanks, very much, Mike. Yes, I agree with you that it sounds like pneumonia (literally as well - the crackles in his lungs are very audible). I'm weary to get an x-ray though because I'm scared he won't make it through the anesthesia (as the vet seemed very hesitant). So I asked for him to be medicated as if he has pneumonia but it's not working. I'm thinking it's more just the wrong medication.
I'm now interested in whether ferrets have xiphoid processes! But this is not the xiphoid process - the protrusion is inferior to it (if it does indeed exist on the ferret - and my quick lame Google search on skeletal parts yeilded nothing!). I only really know human and large domesticated animal anatomy and I can't think of anything this protrusion might be. It's almost pyramidal in shape. Interesting about the sables!
Thanks very much for your help!
[I have never seen a ferret get anesthesia for an
x-ray. Usually, especially if ill, they just stay
quiet enough with a vet tech positioning them,
though some places will let an owner apron up
and do that chore.
If the vet wants to slightly sedate then a tiny bit
of Iso or Sevo gas beforehand which is then removed
before x-rays should do the trick.
