Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: question about ear cleaning
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My vet attended a veterinary conference last year and the advice the participants were given was that it was not necessary to clean ferrets ears and in fact may cause irritation, which predisposes them to infection or other problems, like more wax build-up, etc.

I realize this is contradictory to what people have done for years, however, after he advised me to stop cleaning their ears I did and have never had a problem with dirty ears.

If there is a lot of dirty coloured wax, like coffee grounds or the ears are red then they may have ear mites and need to be treated for those by your vet. Cleaning won't get rid of ear mites.
