I have had similar experiences with Lupron, that is, the results vary considerably with individual ferrets.
Ideally pre-test and post-testing should be done but that is not always feasible, especially when the treatment is given based on clinical symptoms, which may in cases be urgent as in difficulty urinating.
My vets begin treatment based on clinical symptoms alone because the Tennessee panel is very expensive and takes up to 2 weeks to process for us in Canada. Its simply not practical nor wise to wait for the results to come in.
I leave that type of work in the very capable hands of the research veterinarians. The studies are ongoing and many have been published. The protocols are already becoming standard clinical practice.
In other words, we know it works for the vast majority of ferrets and that is good enough for the lay person seeking treatment for his/her own ferrets.
For those who are not seeing results there may be confounding factors that will need to be explored by the attending veterinarians and individual owners.
