Subject: [ferrethealth] ferret with lameness after rabies shot and xrays
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

We are trying to figure out what happened to Sophie and could use input. Initially she seemed to have some tummy troubles so was taken to the vet school last week. Sophie is 6.5 yrs old, blind, and a biter, particularly when she is frightened. She is a free roam ferret at home and very well taken care of. The treating intern insisted she have a rabies vaccination because she was a biter and her owner was worried if she didn't comply and Sophie bit the intern that she would be euthanized and tested for rabies. Sophie had previous years rabies vaccinations. This particular vet school doesn't allow owners to go with the pets for their shots or tests so the intern took Sophie back to be worked on. When he brought her back she was very quiet and still. As soon as she got home the owner noticed Sophie couldn't walk and was dragging the right leg. I thought the rabies shot may have caused some pain and swelling as a knot formed in that area. Sophies tail twitches and flick
s, which I thought might be related to an injured spine, but she was fine before she went to the vet school so it had to happen there. Within several days Sophie was unable to walk and would swim and squirm to try to move. She has had constant care by the owner and is being fed every 4 hours around the clock. Sophie is eating recipe willingly. She took Sophie to our vet on Friday, her glucose was 105. Last night Sophie had a seizure. She is currently on prednisilone 1/2 cc of 5mg/5ml twice daily, carafate, Butorphanex (sp) for pain, and an acid reducer. This morning she started having seizures and screamed 3 times. The 1st one was right after her morning meds and feeding. The pain med relax her enough that she can sleep and the seizure stops. We are starting her on liquid neurontin this afternoon.

Does anyone have an idea of what might have happened? Does this sound like a spinal injury or could it be related to the rabies vaccine? We keep trying to help her but feel helpless when we can't figure out what is going on. Please help.
