To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Troy Lynn,

The oral Tramadol is not tolerated very well - it is extremely bitter, even when compounded. I am not aware of any flavour that makes it any more palatable.

I use the injectible form as sub-q injection.

The dose for both oral and injectible is 1-5mg/kg. BID. It is generally given once every 12 hours, however, can be given every 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 hours, as long as the maximum dose for the day is not exceeded.

I've used it during hospice care and have adjusted the doses as needed on a daily basis.

Some ferrets do better on smaller doses, more often than larger doses only twice a day. I suspect some of the differences are due to the kind of pain it is as well as, individual metabolism.

Of course the ideal is to give the least amount that manages the pain effectively.

Tressie
