Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Coccidia
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi everybody
Just a general info post. Yes, ferrets can get both types of
coccidia (Isospora and Eimeria). Fortunately both types are
treated the same way with either Albon, Trimethoprim/sulfa,
or Marquis paste. Under the right circumstances, coccidia can cause
serious and even fatal diarrhea, so it was worth having a fecal exam done
on new ferrets (especially if they are from a pet store or a ferret
shelter).
Likewise if your ferret is having diarrhea, it is a good thing to check for
coccidia.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
