Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Mycoplasma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Sukie and everybody,
There seems to be some confusion on mycoplasma infections.
Mycoplasma is a new respiratory disease for pet ferrets. It has been
linked to some imported ferret kits from Canada. It is treated just
like mycoplasma infections in rats (with long term Baytril and
doxycycline). There is more information about mycoplasma, coccidia, and
coronavirus infections in the ferrets magazine article, How MSU is helping
ferrets. (go to ferretsmagazine.com and look for it in the featured
articles
section.)
Mycobacteria is a completely different disease and a completely different
bacteria. As most of you know, mycobacteria can cause tuberculosis (TB) in
humans. Fortunately mycobacteria is a very rare disease in ferrets.
Hope that clears up some of the confusion,
Jerry Murray, DVM
