The risks of too much intake that the person (who is
not known to me unless I know here with a different
email address) mentioned to me in the email were:
congestive heart failure, hypertension (high blood
pressure), hypernatremia (excess sodium in the
blood), metabolic alkalosis, edema.

I guess that it is always possible that the person is
not a vet and that I read that into the private note
since I notice on re-reading that part of it can be
read in more than one way. The comments were
put in a very knowledgeable way, though, and
there is some overlap with the problems humans
encounter with too much baking soda.

A great many years ago we used to use baking soda
in litter pots but always put it under the litter. We
have not used it in ages, and some ferrets do nose
even under litter, while others dig. I think that you a
re right and that until more is known in either direction
about this it would make sense to not add that for
animals who are so small.
