Subject: [ferrethealth] sick ferret: unexplained weakness
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I am combing sites to look for symptoms similar to our 3 year old ferret. We came home after being gone for 5 days & found him very weak, although he could stand, eat a little, but hind end weak. (He had been cared for daily while we were gone). Took to emergency vet, glucose was OK, put on IV fluid, kept there overnight. While there he took turn for worse, seizured. Now no longer stands. Next day we took to a vet outside emergency hospital, no distinct diagnosis reached, ferret continued to seizure occasionally (arched back & pointed nose up). Ferret lays on side but will eat and drink well when food (soft food) is put in front of him. Since he cannot stand, we hold him to eat. We are one week later, he still eats well but is still on his side. He seems to respond to us by trying to raise head when we talk & pet him, & he no longer seizures. We have a hard time thinking about putting him to sleep, especially since he is eating we hope he will come out of this. Any ideas on w
hat could explain his symptoms? Anyone ever had a ferret "come out" of a condition like this?

[Among the possibilities to consider are neurological
diseases or diseases that can have a neurological
aspect such as ADV, Canine Distemper (though you
would really expect other symptoms first), etc.

Also to consider are thrown clots. (See the separate
FHL Archives for past posts from Dr. Bruce Williams
who is a renowned ferret pathology expert for why
these are not strokes and why strokes are not a
ferret problem. You can link to that from the FHL
homepage in multiple places.

Thrown clots can be caused by heart disease (the
most common cause), kidney disease, lymphoma,
and more.

With ferrets the possibility of them getting and eating
things they should not has to be considered.

There will be other options.

What tests has your treating vet done?
