There are many diseases that ferrets get after they are 2 years of
age. So it could have been many things that could have made her sick. You can
have a small, medium, or large ferret, so her being small doesn't alarm me at
all. It is also best to spay/neuter your ferret as soon as possible.

[There are ways to interrupt heat and even postpone spaying, and that
topic IS a health topic which I am sure will be addressed.]

If a
female ferret is not spayed she needs to be successfully bred every year
otherwise she will build up too many hormones and develop aplastic anemia, which
is fatal and will kill her. So if you want to successfully have a female
ferret, it is best to spay her asap!
