Subject: [ferrethealth] people/ferret germs
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I went to pet store and their new rule is..
no one can hold their Ferrets anymore..
their excuses:
1. Ferrets can get human germs
2. Ferrets can bite.
i asked how can i chose a ferret if i cannot hold him?
as i am planning on getting another in a few weeks.
The manager kept repeating the above.
Can they get human germs, illness????
[Ferrets can share a few illnesses with humans,
fewer than many other pet animals do, actually.
Rodents especially have a large number of diseases
in common with humans, but primates and rodents
are taxonomically closer than primates and
members of carnivora, or than members of
carnivora and rodents, so it just make sense
that we would have more disease vulnerabilities
in common with rodents.
The most commonly encountered one that humans
and ferrets share is influenza.
If you go into the links section of the FHL and
open the links that have words like zoonotic or
zoonoses you will find what you want.
Here are a few additional links:
http://www.anapsid.org/chomel.html
http://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/
http://www.doh.wa.gov/ehp/ts/zoo/workshop/envzd-dykstra.pdf
As you can see, if they are worried about disease
transmission then they probably need that policy
for all of the types of animals they sell, though,
personally, I could see a pet store refusing to
stock ferret kits during influenza season for
the ferrets' safety's sake.
