Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Mast cell tumor surgery
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

My girl Sabrina, who's on the older side and also has insulinoma, recently had one removed from her front leg, right above the paw. It was not huge, but it was big enough to be a concern, and it wasn't going away. It also started to bleed occasionally if she picked at it or hit it on something. The vet explained to me that mast cell tumors like that one that are sort of 'mushroom shaped' (fairly small base, larger top) are very easy to remove. In fact, he did it in about 15 minutes while I waited, with minimal anesthesia, including 3 or 4 stitches. The spot where it was healed up nicely and without complication, and the surgery itself was a lot cheaper than I thought due to the relative ease. So, if that's the type of mast cell tumor that you have, then there really shouldn't be any difficulty in getting it removed, and you might be avoiding possible infections if you don't get it removed and it does open or bleed.
