HUMAN topical hormonal medications have been affecting pets and=20
children.
(Those of you who have been reading the FHL or FML have read of alerts.)

> The Veterinary Information Network (VIN) plans to survey tens of=20
> thousands of veterinarians around the world to gauge how widespread=20
> and significant are accidental exposures of pets to their owners=92=20
> topical hormone preparations.
...
> In July, the [FDA] issued a safetyannouncement about the potential=20
> for accidental exposures in children and pets to Evamist, a spray-on=20
> estrogen treatment for hot flashes.
>
> An investigation by the VIN News Service published in June found=20
> that a number of cases of accidental exposures in pets involve the=20
> use of hormone replacement therapies prepared by compounding=20
> pharmacies, as well...
>
> ...David Miller, CEO and executive vice president of the=20
> International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP), said he=20
> would be willing to help alert pharmacists to the need to warn=20
> consumers of the risk of topical medication transfer.
...
> survey will be distributed to the nearly 28,000 practitioner members=20
> of VIN, the majority of whom are small-animal veterinarians.
>
> Pion said that while the survey will not document with scientific=20
> precision the prevalence of accidental exposures in pets, it may=20
> give a first estimate of the problem.

This problem is expected to increase as more boomers seek treatment.

BE AWARE THAT TOPICAL HORMONAL TREATMENTS -- sprays, gels, and cream=20
-- DO RUB OFF; cover those locations well to protect children and=20
pets, and wash your hands thoroughly!
