Hi Mike,

Does sound like blocked/infected scent glands. That's a pretty big lump! I generally don't let it go beyond a pea-size swelling. They should be expressed by the vet and checked for infection. I wouldn't leave it too long or they will get infected if they aren't already, which is pretty nasty business. They can develop draining tracts that spread the infection.

Some vets prefer to put them on antibiotics first before expressing them. I've been through this several times and it is very uncomfortable for the ferret to have this done. I suspect downright painful if there's an infection.

Be prepared for a lingering foul odor, whether there's infection or not, that gets on their fur as well, after they are expressed. My vet used to do it at the end of the day - in the storage room where there was an outside door that could be opened.
