Hello Ulrike,
The amount of soluton is usually determined by
the weight of the animal. Stating that you
should know that some of the pets will leave
quicker than others - it is dependent on how
strong the circulatiry system is.. very weak
systems may take longer to get the solution through the body.
Personally, I feel the IP is the most comfortable
way to allow the ferrets and small animals to pass.
Within 30 seconds of the injection they fall
into a very deep (pre surgical kind of sleep
state) if anyone has evey had surgery they might
recall falling quickly off... and they remain in
that deep coma state until the solution reaches
the brain. At that time the brain is
anesthetized and forgets to tell the heart to beat/ lungs to work.
So yes the heart may continue after breathing
operating on it's electrical impulse.. but the
ferret is gone and feels no pain.
Whether the animal gets 1 shot or two ( I would
just use the 2 ml measure for petes sake) they
certainly should be well into a sleep state
before they receive the second one.
I hope this helps explain the process a little better.
