Subject: [ferrethealth] Is thi common?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
We had a 1 year old male, the picture of health with personality plus. Last wed night he vomited and we checked on him during the night and found he had threw up part of a foamy earplug. The next day, I gave him 3 round of white vaseline with no effect so he went first thing in the morning (fri) to the vet for surgery. He was lethargic but able to walk but went in for surgery to remove the remnants right away.
The vet used gas only anesthesia but is it possible to overdose them? Poor darling supposedly woke up a bit but his body temp never came up and he died soon after surgery. I am crushed, shocked and angry and the vet was "sorry about that" and took no responsibility for any possible issue on her end. She did say the intestine where she removed the part of foam looked irritated. Do ferrets die from this surgery normally? Thank you for any input or info here.

[With a complete blockage surgery is the only chance but it is
very risky due to the damage that the foreign bodies and the
inability to defecate themselves cause. Basically, this is a
life or death type of surgery complete with the risks one
expects for something so serious. In that situation the ferret
would have died within about a day more without surgery so
you and the vet did the right thing by trying.
