To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I recently took in a 6 year-old who had yellow discharge oozing from one eye, both eyes weeping, and a swollen muzzle on the same side as the affected eye, which was swollen shut first thing in the morning.

Teeth and gums were in excellent shape considering his age - no broken teeth or any plaque. No abrasion or obvious injury to the eye area. He had been free roam. His owner said his eye had been like that for 5 1/2 months!

We couldn't find the source of the eye infection - started him on Clindamycin, which took down the swelling in the muzzle. However, at Day 5 he started vomiting (reaction to Clindamycin) so was switched over to Amoxicillin for 14 days.

He was also given Chloramphenicol 1% opthalmic ointment twice a day into the affected eye.

His eye has healed completely. I am watching it carefully for recurrence in case its a molar tooth root abscess. Otherwise I have to assume he may have injured it somehow and it got infected. His primary playmate in his previous household was a cat.

I would suspect an eye infection in your little one if there is yellow discharge. Her immune system would be compromised with lymphoma plus if she's on a chemo protocol, i.e., pred, it also compromises the immune system. All of that makes her more susceptible to all sorts of infections.
