Subject: [ferrethealth] Sugar added to Pred
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I can't seem to get a straight answer on this from anyone and hope you guys can help:
I get my Pred compounded at a compound pharmacy because it doesn't contain any added sugar and this is all my vet prescribes. However, most people I know use the Pred with sugar you can get at any local pharmacy for a forth of the compounding price.
I spoke to a few local pharmacies and they all said that Pedia Pred mostly comes with sugar to enhance the taste for children. The sugar-free Pred only comes in 1mg/1ml. Which means I'd have to give my ferrets 5 times as much (the compouned Pred is 5mg/1ml).
So here's my question, does the sugar matter? My insulinoma ferrets live at least 2 years after being diagnosed. I've had many people who use the sugar Pred tell me that their ferrets don't make it that long.
I wonder, if all things being equal, does the sugar-free Pred make a difference.
Thanks!
Lisa
