Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Strange reaction to a cortisone shot?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Two types of reactions occur with pred or cortisone and often is dose dependent. They can get really spacey and knocked out and if it is the long acting injection then it may be a while to see if he gets better. The other type of reaction is bouncing off the walls which obviously that is not the case.

Hope it resolves soon.

He is NOT adrenal...Vet seems too think it's a food allergy. Was treated for ear mites ,and given dex orally, when first presented to the Vet. Which stopped the side licking for awhile. Then he started up again. This time he had a cracked molar, thought the bad tooth was causing his troubles. Had that removed, month or so later he started up again. Also tried benadryl. It is just on his sides/ hips he was getting saliva stains about the size of a 50 cent piece. Never got worse...just never got better. And only on his sides, nowhere else. I keep a diary on each ferret, and the chewing seems to have started when I added Orijen to their mix. I really like this food too! And it can't be a 'mental' or bordem problem. He is never caged and has free roam of a big bedroom when I'm not home/asleep. And the rest of the house when I'm here. Plus
5 brothers/ sisters to play with. I have a singleton girl...that he used to rip into. Now he just pushes his rear into her...as she screams at him. (ahhh the fun of ferrets)

He is sleeping alot and is not his crazy/silly self...at all. Eating/ stools ect. are normal. But he has lost 6 ounces, usually weighs 3 1/2 pounds, and has lost alot muscle mass and fat. Like he is wasteing away. Called the Vet about his lowered energy level....they said it was normal with steroids.? But his muscle/weight loss has me scared. I'm calling the Vet again tomorrow about this....but thought I'd try here tonight. I found nothing in searches on here, FML etc. Just someone mentioning that their boy died! from pred, but he had really bad adrenal issues...the cortisone made his cortisol levels rise....which makes sense. But there is no way my Sid is adrenal....
