I had a young female ferret with juvenile lymphoma, and she was on the orig=
inal Tufts protocol.=A0 I know its nothing scientific, but I am convinced s=
he got several months extra from the Tufts protocol.=A0 It came on so sudde=
nly and severely.=A0
I currently have a male who is undergoing Tufts newer chemo treatment.=A0 H=
e was diagnosed in October of 2008 with lymphoma... yes, that ** 2 ** years=
ago!!!=A0 Granted, it could be a very mild form of lymphoma... but still, =
2 years and he's still going strong!!!!=A0 Both ferrets have done extremely=
well on the chemo drugs themselves... no side effects, good activity and s=
uch.=A0
As for the cytoxan possibly causing other cancers, I believe that a number =
of the chemo drugs say that it is possible to cause other types, rare, but =
possible.=A0 Its always difficult to say for sure which treatment plan is b=
est for each ferret, so I just wanted to give the other side of the story f=
or the Tufts protocols.=A0 If you do the original protocol, it can be time =
consuming to some, as it usually requires a weekly vet visit.=A0 The newer =
one, much more convenient - meds you can give at home, although you do need=
periodic bloodwork checking.=A0 Right now my boy is on a chemo med that is=
given once a month orally.=A0
Tufts has found that usually when a ferret has been on Pred prior to starti=
ng the chemo, they have not had the same results... meaning the drugs aren'=
t as effective.=A0 So that is a huge consideration.=A0 Thats why my vet pre=
fers Diazoxide to Pred for insulinoma.=A0 I also prefer the chemo drugs to =
Pred, as I believe that Pred has worse side effects for ferrets than any of=
the drugs my ferrets have been on.=A0 And you have to keep in mind, lympho=
ma is rarely if ever curable, so we're talking quality (and quantity too) h=
ere.=A0 You could always have your vet contact Tufts for more info.
