Hi Marci. These symptoms (except for difficulty relieving himself - that may be unrelated) sound a lot like cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart). This disease can cause hind end weakness, enlarged belly (fluid pooling in abdominal cavity), lethargy, unusual breathing patterns and weight gain (from fluid retention). Maybe you can see if the vet will perform an ultrasound on the heart.
