Subject: [ferrethealth] allergic reaction, not eating on and off
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

We are having a very difficult time trying to figure out what is going on with a ferret. This ferret was taken to my vet because of 2 large growths in her abdomen at 6 months old. What he found was 2 cystic kidneys, removed 2 urine filled cysts of 200mls each, one kidney completely trashed, the other he was able to remove the cyst and patch the kidney. She did amazingly well for 1 month and is still doing well as far as her kidney goes. There is minimal filling of the cyst, not enough to need drained.

But, 2 weeks ago she started not eating as well, then got to the point she wouldn't eat or play, then would eat well for a day, then not again, so xrays were taken, nothing found and kidney is still functioning. Then she ate well for a couple days, then not again. Her person ran out of Totally Ferret and the order was later than expected and we thought that might be the problem. The order came, the ferret ate well, then her face and feet swelled and she turned red. Off to the vet and was given steroids which promptly took down the swelling and redness. Back home and eating well swelling returned. Thought it might be something in her food but can't be sure. The only food change at that time was the new bag of TF. She was put on dexamethasone injections which kept the swelling down and she was eating and starting to play normally, then went backwards again with symptoms that possibly indicated a partial blockage. In for barium xray, nothing found, transit time normal.
Started swelling again and is now on daily dexamethasone injections. The entire time her spirit has been very good. She wants to live.

Does anyone have any experience with a case like this? It has all of us stumped and we'd like to get it figured out so this little girl can live a normal life. Please check with your vets to see if they have dealt with a similar case. We really want to help this little one.

If you need my vets information, please email me privately at sprite@ksu.edu.

Thanks. tle
