Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Ferret with hind leg weakness and insulinoma- hind leg weakness permanent?
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

There=E2=80=99s a chance that switching to the liquid prednisolone could ma=
ke a big difference. I don=E2=80=99t know why some vets don=E2=80=99t just=
prescribe that in the first place instead of prednisone tablets. If your =
ferret is getting jaundiced, then there is probably some sort of liver prob=
lem that would also affect it=E2=80=99s ability to metabolize the prednison=
e tablet, so perhaps the prednisolone will prove to be more effective. Yo=
u might also find that you don=E2=80=99t need to increase the total daily d=
osage, and may even decrease it. 6 mg daily is a very high dose. But some=
of it may not have been getting used by the body when given in the prednis=
one form.=20

I have encountered increased bilirubin levels with a ferret who had und=
erlying lymphoma that stayed somewhat under control with prednisolone for c=
lose to a year, then rapidly progressed right at the end. I have not encou=
ntered hind end weakness due only to lymphoma, but have dealt with it when =
combined with either insulinoma or pancreatic carcinoma. Again, if switch=
ing to prednisolone helps his blood glucose level, then it may also help th=
e hind end weakness.=20
