I work in pharmacy and might be able to help clarify this.

If it was dispensed to you in the original manufacturer's bottle, regardless of when it was opened, you can use the manufacturer's expiry date. Of all the brands of Carafate I have seen, they are normally kept at room temperature.

If it was transferred into another bottle, it is usually given a 6 month expiry from date dispensed.

If it was compounded in the pharmacy, the pharmacy uses a standardized formula and should label the bottle with a lot and expiry date, maximum 3 months. In this case, it could be refrigerated or kept at room temperature, because of the ingredients.

If you're not sure, ask your pharmacist, or another pharmacist at your pharmacy. Ask them to show you the stability and storage information for the product they're selling to you. It's your right.
