Ferrets whose health is already compromised by other problems such as insul=
inoma or adrenal disease may be particularly susceptible to getting the flu=
, and may be unable to fight it off, so be especially careful when handling=
them.=20
A year ago a bad flu swept thru my house and hit all of the ferrets we had =
at the time. All eventually recovered fully except for Trinity, who was al=
ready compromised by advanced adrenal disease and insulinoma and IBD. She =
had been doing relatively well in handling those diseases, but when hit by =
the flu, her immune system could not fight it off, and she had to be put to=
sleep. Some steroids such as prednisolone can suppress the immune system.=
It=E2=80=99s really tough when you do all you can to help them retain a re=
asonable quality of life thru insulinoma and adrenal disease, only to lose =
them to something like the flu that * might * be able to be avoided with ce=
rtain precautions.

[Yes, for the compromised ferrets even precautions
won't always help, and sometimes the virus sheds BEFORE
the people even know that they are ill.
