Sabrina was a 7 year old ferret that I had for most of her life, she had tumors
removed from her pancreas and her spleen removed. The insulinoma came back and
we were able to treat it for 3 and a half years. She was quite the trooper
taking her meds which consisted of pred, carafate, and diazoxide. I would spend
an hour in the morning and eve making sure that her meds where given properly.
The last 3 months that she was alive she developed a problem with her hinds
legs. She over flexated the joint and we could help get is straight again, but
after a bit that seemed to not be the problem as she was losing weight and lost
use of her hind legs. The vet was very understanding when we asked that she be
put down just before Christmas last year. I am glad to see that you are
willing to do what is right for him. It is a hard decision to make but one that
I don't regret as it was so hard to watch her struggle to do the simple things
and she tried so hard to play with the others by dragging herself around.
Towards the end she got her own playtime and held more than the others. The
pred had made her more prone to gastrointestinal problems in the last few months
she lived and she was treated for that as well as the insulinoma. Yes she hated
the rinsing and wiping after she used the dog training pads but it kept her
clean. In the end she had developed lymphoma and it spread to fast to do
anything about it.
