Subject: [ferrethealth] Help! Uncontrollable itching/scratching
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Ella Belle, my ferret, doesn't have fleas and no red or swollen skin from itching, but she constantly itches and scratches herself. I have checked her over numerous times and never seen any fleas or any bugs of any sort. She will itch or scratch herself and then hold her mouth open and "flip out". What I mean by flipping out is she will thrash back and forth and bite whatever is around her, usually some sort of material object such as a toy, shoe, or clothing. I'm not sure what is wrong with her, like I said I have checked her over every day due to concern. I only give her a bath when needed about once a month or once every two months, depending on her level of smell. I change out her blankets every three days and change her litter box every day. I use wood pellets for her litter, which was recommended by the Ferret Nook in Cambridge, Wisconsin (a ferret shelter). Her food is a high quality ferret food made by 8-in-1 and I give her ferret treats such as ferretone and
ferrevite every other day or so. I'm concerned that I am doing something wrong or that she has some kind of skin condition. Again she has no red or swollen skin from itching/scratching/biting herself, but am concerned as this is my first ferret. Someone please help!
