Subject: [ferrethealth] Deslorelin implants, our results
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I've lost several ferrets that had Deslorelin implants less than a year ago. Caleb and Tiny had implants. At the time of the implants they both had lost most of their fur but on physical exam no growths were felt in their abdomen. I lost Caleb on Friday, his implant was in May of this year, his prostate was grossly enlarged, the left adrenal was enlarged, the right adrenal was grossly enlarged and surrounded the vena cava. His bladder was staying emptied as he felt like he had to urinate all the time from the enlarged prostate. At his vet appt an ultrasound was done and we started him on medications. He died that afternoon. I lost Tiny a couple weeks ago, when opened she was filled with tumors on top of tumors in her abdomen and on every organ. Sully I lost earlier this year, his tumor at time of implant was not felt, a few months later it was grossly enlarged and was not able to be removed. Leo I lost 2 months after the implant. Poppy died weeks after her implant. All
of these ferrets were not critical at time of implant, in fact they were doing very well.

Dippy and Pharoah had implants and are doing well. Pharoah is on his second implant, the 1st one lasted 14 months before he started showing symptoms again. He has had one adrenal surgically removed a year before the deslorelin.

Bear, Mr. Man, Kimoda, and Squirt have not visually responded to their implants they received a couple months ago.

Out of 20 implants I have two that responded favorably and are still living, 4 that have not responded as of yet, and 14 that have died - 2 of which grew all their fur back but were found to have grossly enlarged tumors when they died less than a year after implants. I didn't have necropsies done on the others.

Spot is older and adrenal, and will either go in for surgery or an implant. At this time I'm leaning towards surgery. I previously opted for Deslorelin because it seemed it would be easier on the little ones.
