> Abstract
> Objectives: To assess the feasibility of performing=20
> electrocardiography (ECG) and echocardiography on conscious ferrets=20
> and to establish reference values for this species under these=20
> conditions. Methods: End-systolic and end-diastolic left ventricular=20
> (LV) diameters, LV and interventricular septal thicknesses were=20
> measured by M-mode echocardiography, while left atrial, aortic and=20
> pulmonary trunk diameters were determined by two-dimensional=20
> echocardiography in 46 ferrets. In some animals the maximum=20
> velocities of blood flow in the aorta and the pulmonary trunk were=20
> also measured by spectral Doppler. ECG examinations were performed=20
> by using limb leads both in right lateral recumbency and in the so-
> called "hanging" position. In the course of the ECG examinations=20
> (n=3D43), the occurrences, directions, durations and amplitudes of the =
> P, QRS and T waves and the duration of the PR- and QT intervals were=20
> recorded for all six leads. Results: ECG and echocardiography were=20
> successfully performed on non-sedated ferrets in 90 and 96% of the=20
> cases, respectively. Males were significantly heavier and had larger=20
> cardiac dimensions compared to females. Clinical Significance:=20
> Performance of both echocardiography and ECG are feasible techniques=20
> in conscious ferrets, and reference values are now available for=20
> future comparisons.

This sounds like useful data.
We never had any of our ferrets knocked out for either of these tests;=20
the first of which was well over a dozen years ago but that was a=20
somewhat unusual thing to do with a ferret then. She had dilated=20
cardiomyopathy with ventricular bigemini and survived a long time with=20
that thanks to one of the founders of the FHL, the one vet founder,=20
suggesting Digoxin (pre-FHL). (In February the FHL will be 10 years=20
old, though this is our third location.)
