Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Terrible Reaction to Distemper Injection - UPDATE on condition
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have posted about Mollie and her horrible reaction to her distemper injection and all that had been done for her.
I had pre treated her with benadryl and Pred prior to her receiving the injection which was on Wednesday. She was given Oxygen, epeniphrine, a steriod and benadryl. Her temp had drooped to 93 degrees.
We brought her home on Thursday and returned back to the vets Thursday p.m. as she was open mouth breathing and was very lethargic. He checked her over quickly and felt that she needed tagamet, benadryl and pred for that night. We followed is directions as he stated to us and once again took her home.
She does eat her soup with assistance from me and that is really about all she is able to do.
She continued to open mouth breathe Friday and the vet put her on omperazole instead of the tagamet, discontinued the benadryl and pred. and sent us home. Still no idea as to why she is breathing thru her mouth and is labored.
Saturday I took her in for blood work and a chest film as I wanted to know if we would be able to tell anything at all as she is really becoming extremely tired at this point. This was my idea to have done not the vets but he did do it. Chest film was fine, one part of the blood work was all good, her blood glucose was 126 and the other which would be the wbc, etc had to be sent out as something happened and they received a wrong reading.
Today, we took a small amount of afrin nose spray and diluted it with saline and placed it in her nose to see if that would help her ( we saw this on the archives from Dr. Sue - Jan 31, 2004 ). Upon doing this we had bright red blood come out from her nose and we have no idea what this is significant of.
She continues to open mouth breathe and looks just awful. Her eyes are dull, at times look as if they had watered some and that is where we are at this point. To watch her have such a difficult time breathing is heart breaking to us especially when we do not know what we are working with or how to treat whatever it may be, if it is treatable. We do not know what tests to ask for or what to ask the vet to do. ( which at this point I feel it should be the other way around ).
If there are any vets that have had to deal with basically something similar we would really appreciate any advice that could be given. Anyone else that has been thru this, please share with us what worked or did not work.
Thanks in advance - Cindy Scheidt
I am sure I have spelling errors but I am trying to get this on and am in hopes that I do receive replies to this.
Thanks so much, Cindy Scheidt
