To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have never heard that gurgling noise come from any of my ferrets. Rufus threw up sometimes on some of his worse days (Insulinoma--with Lymphoma, which we found at necropsy after helping him to the bridge) but I never heard any of those sounds from him. There was retching but no gurgle. I really hope someone's advice or the vet helps him out, he just seems miserable. I felt so bad when Rufus was like that, and didn't seem to be eating as well. It's great that Cubby can at least eat a little soup; Rufus would hardly eat water-softened kibble. He only wanted his kibble & that was it.

[When megaesophagus is present feeding the
ferret with the throat in a more vertical position
reduces the reflux. The video did not remind
me of that but it could have been a good day,
or that different food may simply work better.
So, that position should be tried to see if things
improve.
A throat infection, or throat and mouth sores,
for example, ones secondary to kidney disease,
may be present.
One thing that has not been mentioned is
dysphagia which can be seen in elderly people
but I don't know if it happens in ferrets ever
since I think that the bipedal human skull position
may play a part though I am not sure. Dysphagia is
difficulty swallowing and in case it can happen in ferrets
the trick is to make everything of easy textures
to swallow. Food is made to break apart easily
or given as a slurry and water is made thicker
with the addition of bubbles, thickening agents,
or even by instead having things like slightly
thick broth.
