Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: I'd like an opinion ... olive oil
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

There is no sugar in Ferretone.

Olive oil should be safe and is
also a good skin moisturizer
for topical application. It is
high in monosaturates. The
oil types which can pose a
problem at times for ferret
are ones high in polyunsaturates.

Originally, some people worried
that ferrets, like people, might
wind up with too much Vitamin A
from such oils BUT it turns out
that ferrets are wonderfully
adapted to having high intakes of
Vitamin A and *might* at least at times
(so never megadose and always, always
first ask the treating vet) even need
more than some of them get. That
is different than humans. Also
different from humans is that ferrets
and dogs can too easily get too much
Vitamin D which can result in calcium
deposits in organs such as the kidneys
and heart.

So, reducing the D3 intake this way might
not be a bad idea.

(Yes, the dosing numbers in that are accurate.)

Yes, ferrets are pretty much the opposite of
humans in relation to those two nutrients. They
are descended from species which ate plenty of
Vitamin A rich organs like livers but lived in
dark burrows and had crepuscular (dawn and
dusk) times of peak activity whereas we are
from species with a short and limited
non-arthropod animal-food-source dietary history
and diurnal (daytime) activity with little sun protection
for most of our ancestry. Hence, modern humans too
often not getting enough Vitamin D (Have testing
done before supplementing, of course.) but easily
getting too much Vitamin A, but ferrets being the
exact opposite and getting too much D too easily
while it is pretty hard to give them too much A.
