You could go ahead and go another barium but you always run the risk of him aspirating the barium, especially this far into the disease. Food in the lungs is bad but barium in the lungs is far worse. They get pneumonia very quickly and it is hard to treat. I would suggest to go ahead and just treat him like he is and see how he responds. Maybe get an xray as it will be able to show you the esophagus still (just not at evident as with it would be filled with barium) and you can see how his lungs are doing at this point - look for pneumonia. Just let your vets know that you just want to try these last few things or it will be euthanasia. You have nothing to lose at this point. I would try all of the things I suggested in the last e-mail and see how he does. It is hopeful if he kept one meal down! Again I would use pureed kibble too as it is balance for him along with baby food and a/d (get at your vet). I am sure you will need a prescription for the cisapride from your
vet and have it compounded unless they happen to stock it. Just tell them this is a last ditch effort for this little guy. Hopefully they won't give you any trouble about it. Sometimes ferrets are different creatures and if you don't know their tendencies and what a disease process looks like in THEM you could overlook something. I have the advantage of owning ferrets for over 10 years and then being a vet on top of it. I guess you could call it cheating!! ;-)
Keep me posted with him!
Dr. Heather
