Subject: [ferrethealth] Advil in ferrets? Helpful link to human meds bad for pets

What in the world was the rationale for using that particular medication? Or any human med unless the vet says so. Maybe the FDA should insist that labels on OTC meds say not for use in infants or animals.
I found this link, it does have a "pet poison helpline" number

[I don't know how much I can say,
so let's just say that the ones who
are now caring for the ferret are
NOT the ones who gave that med.
There really are people out there
who figure that an over the counter
medication they take themselves
will be safe for any other species, and
sadly then use them on animals.

Every ferret text, every adoptive document,
every ferret sales document, every general
ferret book, etc. should all have information
on Animal Poison Control resources and
always asking vets before giving anything.
That also goes for any advice a person gets
online, including here. Ask the treating vet.
Even if something is safe for some ferrets an
individual ferret may have a medical condition
that prevents use or a medication conflict.
The links to poisoning resources can always
be found through the FHL and FHL Archives
but it is better to read beforehand and keep
the contact info handy in your own phone books.
