To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
My ferret had the same problems.
As a medicin to control his bloodsugar lever he got proglycem ( Thats how it s called here in the Netherlands, but i think this is a common name)
I think treatin him with proglycem is a more serious and secure way to treat his problem, Because it s been given w great succes by my ferret specialized vet for many animals with this sort of problems.
Good luck with your little one.
Greetings, Joos from the Netherlands
[Diazoxide is the generic of Proglycem
and often easier to find and cheaper. In
the U.S. it is often easier to find either
through a compounding pharmacy. (That
is a trick now used sometimes for people
who need the med, too, In fact, I know
the parents of a child who needs it who
used the FHL's Compounding Pharmacy
list located in the Files section and
passed it on to an A-List of parents and
physicians helping children with
hypoglycemia and more...).
Diazoxide/Proglycem is a *great* med for
the ferrets for whom it works but it does
not work for all ferret who have insulinoma.
No one is quite sure why that varies. We
had one who liked long spaces between his
meals and diazoxide made all the difference
for him.
