Subject: [ferrethealth] Pneumonia
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My 5 yr old girl Sady was diagnosed with pneumonia over thanksgiving. She was put on Baytril. She did get better but now its back. there is alot of wetness around her nose and her breathing is quick and short. looks the same as last time. I still have a coupel of Baytril tablets that I will put in her soup a quarter at a time. I am wondering if a humidifier would help at all.

[Do NOT give the meds as your first step.

First step: Contact vet. The chances are that an appointment
is needed as well as x-rays.

IF there is pneumonia again then the meds may need adjustment
because you could be otherwise creating a more antibiotic
resistant strain.

If this is a second pneumonia infection then there may be an underlying
triggering factor beyond antibiotic resistance of the bacteria and
the vet will need to seek that. Do people smoke around the ferret?
Is there a different infection ongoing? Is the ferret having reflux?
Does the ferret have a tumor? Is there a sinus infection? The
questions go on.

It may not be pneumonia but influenza which is common at this
time of year. Ditto bacterial sinus infection but they are much
less common in ferrets than influenza. (There are NO types of
"cold" causing viruses for which ferrets are used as research
animals even though they are used for so many other respiratory
research studies because ferrets don't appear to get any types
of colds. BTW, the most common of those in people is the rhinovirus.)

Finally, if that med is not grooved for splitting then the med can
NOT be counted upon to be evenly spread and splitting may be
useless because the ferret may get too much med one time and too
little another time which builds "super bugs" (antibiotic resistant
bacteria). There is a list of Compounding Pharmacists in the FHL
Files section and those are who you need to make a med that will
provide consistent doses in such a situation.
