Subject: [ferrethealth] Insulin for Diabetes
To: Ferret Health <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I have a 6 yo female who was previously insulinomic, been on Pred and Diazo=
xide, then she underwent surgery (partial pancreatectomy) just back in Nove=
mber 2010, who has now been diagnosed with Diabetes. This is average 8 week=
s post-surgery.=A0 I know someone else just wrote in about this also...=A0 =
I was also under the impression also that post-op diabetes happened just ab=
out immediately after surgery if it was going to happen.=A0 Diti had her su=
rgery, and had normal glucose readings post-op.=A0 Now 8 weeks later, she's=
diabetic.=A0

Currently she's on Humulin N insulin.=A0 Its human insulin.=A0 The poor gir=
l, this has been almost 2 weeks and we're still trying to get her levels re=
gulated.=A0 I have the AlphaTrak, and from hour to hour her results vary wi=
dely.=A0 I can tell clinically that she's not doing well, so I believe the =
testing results are pretty accurate.=A0

I checked the archives for types of insulin, and read that PZI, I guess the=
common insulin for ferrets is no longer made.=A0 My vet also stated that t=
he 'regular' insulin for ferrets is no longer made, although I don't recall=
if she called it PZI.=A0 We have also been given the option of using a lon=
ger acting insulin, although its been used in ferrets only a handful (if th=
at many) of times.=A0 What are the types of insulin that is most commonly b=
eing used now, and that has the most stabilizing success rate?=A0 I underst=
and this will be difficult to control, but her levels vary from 158 to almo=
st into the 500's.=A0 Any info highly appreciated!
Thanks,
Andrea
