Subject: [ferrethealth] Lantus Insulin
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

>>I have a 6 yo female who was previously insulinomic, been on Pred and
Diazoxide, then she underwent surgery (partial pancreatectomy) just back in
November 2010, who has now been diagnosed with Diabetes. This is average 8
weeks post-surgery. I know someone else just wrote in about this also... I
was also under the impression also that post-op diabetes happened just about
immediately after surgery if it was going to happen. Diti had her surgery,
and had normal glucose readings post-op. Now 8 weeks later, she's diabetic.

I had a 6 year old ferret who developed diabetes about 3 months after a
partial pancreatectomy. We started trying to use PZI, and could not get her
stabilized. After about a week, we switched her to Lantus, and within 24
hours she was stable. She did well and lived another 9 months or so before
developing a serious heart problem (a level 3 A/V node block)
Unfortunately, she did not respond to the treatments for the heart problem,
and so I had to let her go. However, I strongly recommend Lantus for
ferrets with diabetes. Not only did it do wonders for my girl, I have heard
many favorable reports from others with diabetic ferrets.
